6 Things I Wish My Patients Knew

Insights from a Doctor: What I Wish Every Patient Understood About Their Health and Care

As a sports medicine doctor and chiropractor, I’ve spent years helping athletes, weekend warriors, and everyday movers and groovers recover from injuries, optimize performance, and stay pain-free. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that many patients come in with misconceptions—about their bodies, their treatment, and even their own recovery potential.

I wish my patients knew that healing isn’t always about quick fixes, that pain doesn’t always mean damage, and that small, daily habits can make a world of difference in their long-term health. Whether you're dealing with nagging back pain, a sports injury, or just trying to move better, understanding these key truths could change the way you approach your health.

Let’s dive into some of the most important things I wish every patient knew. It might just help you prevent your next injury—or recover faster from the one you’re facing now.

#1 - Treating Far Beyond Your Spine

Chiropractors treat more than just neck and back pain! While that's a big part of what I do, it's just the tip of the iceberg. As a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician, I specialize in movement, trained to assess and treat dysfunctions throughout the entire body, not just the spine. From headaches to sports injuries and joint mobility issues, our office is here to restore movement and improve quality of life.

Got nagging headaches? That tension in your neck or poor posture could be the culprit. Dealing with a stubborn sports injury? We help restore mobility, reduce inflammation, and get you back in action faster. Struggling with stiff joints or feeling like your body just isn’t moving the way it used to? We work to improve range of motion and optimize movement patterns so you can perform at your best—whether that’s on the field, in the gym, or just keeping up with your kids.

#2 - "Quick Fixes" Don't Lead to Long-Term Results

Many patients hope for a single adjustment, stretch, or exercise to make their pain disappear instantly. While treatments can provide immediate relief, lasting improvement comes from consistency-- whether through rehab exercises, movement corrections, or lifestyle changes. Healing is a process, and long-term results require commitment.

#3 - Pain Doesn't Always Mean Damage

One of the biggest misconceptions is that pain always equals injury. While pain is your body's way of signaling that something needs attention, it doesn't necessarily mean you have tissue damage. Sometimes, pain results from muscle imbalances, poor movement patterns, or even stress. Addressing these factors early can prevent small discomforts from turning into major problems.

#4 - Alternatively, You Don't Need to Be in Pain to Benefit

Healthcare isn't just being reactive-- it should include being proactive! Too often, people wait until they're in pain to seek care, but by that point, it takes longer to rehabilitate and correct. This is why regular care can prevent issues from arising, optimize your movement, and keep you at your best before they lead to pain or injury.

Think of it like maintaining your car. You wouldn't wait for the engine to fail before getting an oil change. The same goes for your body. If you want to stay mobile or just aim for long-term health, proactive care keeps you moving efficiently effectively.

#5 - I Work WITH Your Healthcare Team

I am not an alternative to your primary care physician or orthopedic surgeon-- I'm part of your healthcare team. Collaborating with MDs, DOs, physical therapists, and other providers give you the best, most well-rounded care possible. Whether it's managing pain, improving mobility, or enhancing recovery, collaboration is key to achieving the best outcomes for your health and performance.

For example, if you have a torn ACL, an orthopedic surgeon may handle the repair, a physical therapist will guide your initial rehab, and I can help restore mobility, address compensation patterns, and ensure proper joint function during recovery.

Similarly, if you're dealing with chronic headaches, your primary care physician might rule out underlying conditions, while I focus on relieving tension, improving posture, and enhancing spinal movement. By working together, we create a well-rounded treatment plan that helps you heal faster, move better, and feel your best.

#6 - Your Body Is Capable of More Than You Think

One of the most rewarding parts of my job is helping patients realize they're strong and more adaptable than they believe. Your body is built to heal, move, and thrive--sometimes, it just needs the right guidance. Whether you're recovering from an injury, working through discomfort, or simply trying to move better, don't underestimate what your body is capable of with the right care and mindset.
