FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Do I need a referral to see a sports medicine doctor or chiropractor?
No, you do not need a referral to see our providers here. However, if you are currently treating with another provider and would like for us to collaborate as a team, you may have your provider refer directly to us using this form.
  • How do I schedule an appointment?
We've made scheduling easy and convenient! Schedule online: Under "Book By Treatment" select "NEW PATIENT" and follow the prompts to select a day and time for your appointment. Create your online patient portal to complete your booking. A confirmation will be sent with intake paperwork to be completed to finalize your booking. Texting or Call 614-681-0408: Let us know you are a new patient as well as your preferred date and time. We will confirm your appointment as soon as possible and a confirmation will be sent with intake paperwork to be completed to finalize your booking.
  • Why is it important to complete my intake paperwork before my appointment?
Completing your intake paperwork before your appointment is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, it allows our doctors to thoroughly review your medical history and current health concerns prior to your visit. This enables them to tailor their approach and provide the best possible care, ensuring that your appointment is as productive and beneficial as possible. Secondly, having your paperwork completed in advance helps streamline the check-in process, minimizing wait times, and avoiding any unnecessary delays. Failure to complete your paperwork will cause delays to your appointment or require rescheduling.
  • Why is a credit card required on file? Will I be charged?
As part of our office policies, we require a credit card on file to secure your appointment. Rest assured, your card will not be charged until the time of your visit. However, please note that your card may be subject to no-show or cancellation fees if you fail to attend your appointment or cancel within 24-hours of your scheduled time. This policy allows us to manage our schedule effectively and maintain our commitment to all of our patients.
  • What if I need to reschedule or cancel my appointment?
We understand that life can be unpredictable and sometimes you need to cancel or reschedule your appointments. To accommodate this and ensure the best service for all of our patients, we have a 24-hour cancellation policy. If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please do so at least 24 hours in advance via the patient portal, email (office@hugheshealth.net), or text/call (614.681.0408). Cancelling within the 24 hours will incur a $50 non-refundable charge. Additionally, if you do not show up to your appointment without informing us, this will result in a $50 non-refundable charge.
  • What should I bring to my first visit?
Please bring a valid photo ID. This ensures we can accurately verify your identity and maintain the security of your medical records. Additionally, if you have any relevant medical documents or diagnostic images, please bring them along as well. Our primary focus is to provide you with personalized treatments and having additional information will help us tailor care to your specific needs.
  • What should I expect during my first visit?
Your first visit is designed to be comprehensive and personalized to ensure we address all your health concerns. During this time, the doctor will conduct a thorough medical history, discuss your goals for a pain-free and healthy life, and perform a physical exam. If necessary, specialized testing or referral for advanced imaging may also be completed. We will then develop a customized treatment plan and outline potential non-invasive treatment options tailored specifically for you.
  • How long should I expect the first visit to take?
On average, you can expect your initial appointment to take 30 minutes. We pride ourselves on valuing your time and strive to maintain a timely schedule to best serve all of our patients.
  • What should I wear to my appointment?
We recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being treated. If your appointment is for a specific part of the body, like your knee or shoulder, shorts or tank top would be ideal to allow the doctor to fully examine and treat that region.
  • Do you accept walk-ins or same-day appointments?
While we do not accept walk-ins, we are committed to accommodating your needs and may offer same-day appointments based on availability. To ensure you receive the timely care you require, please contact us in advance to schedule an appointment. Our team will work diligently to find a convenient time slot for you.
  • Can I use my health insurance for treatment?
We prioritize providing high-quality, personalized care without the constraints often imposed by insurance companies. This approach allows us to focus more on your individual needs and less on administrative tasks. While we do not accept health insurance, we offer various payment options, including flexible payment plans and the acceptance of HSA and FSA cards. We are also happy to provide you with the necessary documentation for you to submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement. Although we cannot assist you with the insurance claims itself, our goal is to ensure you receive the best possible care in a way that is straightforward and transparent. This means no surprise bills, hidden costs, or worries about what might not be covered.
  • Why does a doctor's office not accept insurance?
By working directly for you and not the insurance company, we are able to give you the personalized care you seek and need in order to have you feeling your best again. Insurance companies often prioritize paying for invasive and surgical treatments instead of understanding and addressing the root cause of your conditions or wellness care. This is similar to using car insurance to cover for big accidents but paying out of pocket for routine maintenance and upkeep. Our patient-centric approach ensures you receive the best and appropriate non-invasive and non-surgical treatment you need to achieve a pain-free, healthy life.
  • Can I use my HSA and FSA to pay for treatment?
Yes! While we do not accept health insurance, we do accept HSA and FSA cards. HSAs and FSAs allow you to pay for your medical care with tax-free money which gives you a discount on the amount of your tax rate. You may also check with your HR department to be sure and ask for their criteria for coverage.
  • What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept payments in cash, debit, and credit cards such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover. Additionally, for those who prefer using digital wallets, we accommodate Google Pay and Apple Pay. To better serve our patients with health savings and flexible spending accounts, we also accept HSA and FSA payments.
  • Are there financing services available?
We offer patient financing through Affirm because we understand that managing healthcare expenses can be challenging. Affirm allows you to break down your healthcare costs into monthly payments, enabling you to receive the personalized treatments you need without the immediate financial burden. This financing option ensures that you can focus on achieving a pain-free, healthy life, tailored to your personal goals. For more information on how to apply for financing through Affirm, please contact our office or speak to your doctor at your next visit.
  • Can I pay per session for the sauna? Are there package options or a membership program available?
You can pay per session for access to the steam sauna, which allows for single-use experience without any long-term commitment. For those who prefer more regular use, we offer convenient package options that provide a discounted rate for multiple sessions. Additionally, we have a membership program that includes various benefits, such as unlimited sauna access and priority booking. Whether you’re looking for a one-time session or something more ongoing, we have a suitable option for you.
  • What kind of sauna is at Hughes Health? Is it a steam or infrared sauna?
We offer a traditional hot rock steam sauna unlike other offices and businesses in the greater Columbus area. The traditional sauna is able to get to higher temperatures compared to infrared lighting. The steam also provides a welcoming moist heat compared to the dry heat from an infrared sauna.
  • How hot does the sauna get?
Our traditional hot rock steam sauna is capable of reaching temperatures of 195°F. The steam and heat is perfect for relaxation and stress relief, detoxification, muscle and joint recovery, and improved circulation.
  • How long is a sauna session? How long should I stay in there?
We offer 30 minute time slots for the sauna room. A session typically last between 15 to 20 minutes but it is based on your tolerance to heat. For beginners, starting with shorter increments (5-10 minutes) and gradually increasing duration is recommended. Always listen to your body and hydrate properly.
  • What should I wear in the sauna?
We recommend wearing lightweight clothing or undergarments in the sauna. This allows for a comfortable experience while ensuring that our facilities remain hygienic for everyone. Towels are provided for your session and should be used to sit on the benches and wipe off excess sweat. We respectfully ask that no one gets fully undressed while using the sauna in the event of an emergency.
  • How often should I use a steam sauna?
For general wellness, 2-3 sessions per week are recommended. However, frequency can vary based on individual health goals and tolerance. Athletes or those using it for recovery may benefit from more frequent sessions.
  • What are the benefits of using a traditional steam sauna?
A traditional steam sauna provides numerous health benefits, including improved circulation, muscle relaxation, detoxification through sweating, stress reduction, and enhanced respiratory function. It can also aid in post-exercise recovery and pain relief.
  • Can a steam sauna help with pain relief and recovery?
Yes, the heat from a steam sauna helps relax muscles, reduce stiffness, and improve circulation, making it beneficial for individuals recovering from injuries, managing chronic pain, or relieving post-workout soreness.
  • Can a steam sauna help with weight loss?
While a steam sauna can promote weight loss through sweating, relaxation, and improving circulation, it is not a substitute for exercise and a healthy diet. Using the sauna can be a beneficial component of your overall health regimen when combined with regular physical activity and a diet tailored to your individual health goals. For personalized advice on weight loss and overall wellness, our team of experts is here to support you.
  • Is using a steam sauna safe for everyone?
While steam saunas are generally safe, individuals with heart conditions, low blood pressure, respiratory issues, or pregnancy should consult their doctor before use. If you feel dizzy, lightheaded, or unwell, exit the sauna immediately.
  • Is the sauna public or in a private space?
Our steam sauna is housed in a private room. Each session is reserved for 30 minutes allowing you to relax and rejuvenate in a tranquil and private environment. This also allows you to enter and leave the sauna as needed to cool off and hydrate without worrying about others in the clinic.
  • What should I do to stay hydrated when using the sauna?
Drink plenty of water before and after your sauna session to replace lost fluids. Avoid alcohol or caffeine before your session as they can contribute to dehydration. We do offer complimentary water in the sauna room and recommend bringing an insulated bottle to use while inside the sauna.
  • How big is the sauna? Can I book a session with another person?
The sauna and private room can comfortably accommodate two adults at a time. We specifically chose this size to ensure it offers a spacious yet intimate environment, perfect for relaxation and recovery. Whether you're looking to unwind after a treatment or enhance your overall wellness, our sauna is an excellent addition to your personalized care plan.
